Police forces in the England and Wales currently involve approximately 8,014 Police Support Volunteers (PSVs) and 9,174 Special Constables (SCs). This number makes up a considerable proportion of the policing capability. In 2021 approximately 8,272 Police Support Volunteers (PSVs) and 9,571 Special Constables (SCs). This between 3 – 4 % fall in the recruitment and retention of volunteers. This decreasing number of volunteers means, first line managers need to better understand the importance of their effective line management, if we are to grow this valuable volunteering resource.
